One sunk cost that is often ignored is the cost savings when manual work is eliminated for a DevOps engineer. In mapping out Trility’s Azure Guidebook, we put together an estimate of how much time a DevOps engineer would save over five years if a company automated how their environments were configured in Azure.

Anyone using or considering using Azure, should read our article that outlines the solution and the common pitfalls you can avoid. However, if you need to sell the return on investment for slowing down to speed up your cloud journey, the infographic below is just time saved in eliminating manual work. It doesn’t address the cost-saving optimization or revenue-generating activities your DevOps teams can focus on when their time is freed up.

In the infographic below, we've calculated estimated savings for a company with 1,000 apps, services, and workloads in manual DevOps Work for the lifetime performance (estimated at five years).

This infographic demonstrates the return on investment a company can achieve when environment setups are automated using DevOps practices.

Estimate Considerations

Number of Apps, Services, and Workloads

For a medium- to large-sized company, they could easily have 500 to 5,000 apps, services, or workloads that a DevOps engineer is responsible for maintaining. We used 1,000 because it does make math easier.

Cost of a DevOps Engineer

For the cost of a Senior DevOps Engineer, we used $80 to encompass not just the $61 hourly wage rate for a Senior DevOps Engineer (Salary.com) but also the employer costs – benefits, payroll tax, insurance, and other costs – and adjusted it using data from the U.S. Small Business Administration.
