To remain competitive by using near real-time reporting and insights, Trility migrated critical data and PowerBI reports from a legacy iSeries system to a cloud-based Dynamics Finance & Operations (F&O) platform using Microsoft Fabric. This set the foundation for a unified data model, improved data consistency, and future-proofed the client’s analytics for scalability and growth.
To remain competitive, this retail client required seamless integration of legacy and new data sources. This challenge also presented an opportunity to establish a new data model that would support future analytics growth and provide a more scalable, business-focused foundation for reporting.
They were transitioning from a legacy iSeries system to a cloud-based Dynamics Finance & Operations (F&O) platform to enhance scalability and operational efficiency. This migration revealed a critical challenge: The need to move a suite of business-critical PowerBI reports into a new, unified data model that integrates data from both systems. The existing reports were tied to the legacy system’s data architecture, and the client risked operational delays, misaligned insights, and inefficient decision-making without alignment with the new model.
Trility began by connecting the Dynamics F&O system to an Azure Data Lake using Microsoft Fabric to ensure a seamless flow of operational data. To understand reporting requirements, a detailed analysis of the client's existing PowerBI reports and data model was conducted.
Based on this, Trility designed a new, unified reporting data model that could integrate data from both the legacy iSeries system and the new Dynamics F&O platform. This model aligned with the client's future analytics goals and business needs.
Trility implemented a medallion architecture, a recommended Microsoft Fabric design pattern, to support near real-time reporting for key reports, ensuring data pipelines were performant, secure, and reliable. Additionally, Trility provided the necessary schema documentation to help the client translate legacy data into the new model. A prioritized subset of reports was rebuilt to optimize decision-making and reporting efficiency.
By consolidating data sources into a unified model, the client significantly reduced maintenance overhead, allowing their internal teams to focus on more strategic initiatives rather than managing multiple data streams. This shift led to enhanced operational efficiency and freed up resources for higher-value tasks.
The client also achieved greater accuracy and consistency in their reporting, increasing trust in the data used for decision-making. Sales teams can now rely on near real-time analytics – improving opportunities to sell to the right people at the right times.
The improved data integrity and streamlined architecture also laid the foundation for future innovation. With all data organized in a unified model, the client is now able to leverage advanced tools like Co-Pilot and Fabric Data Science, opening new opportunities for AI-driven insights and enhanced analytics capabilities. This positions the business to remain competitive and responsive to evolving market demands while supporting long-term growth.
